EMQ 2009/2010 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

As of this writing the skies are clear, it's the beginning of a new year and the quartet is busier than ever.  There are a lot of great events to share with you so as usual with these newsletters I'll re-cap briefly some of our adventures of 2009.

At the end of January we made our yearly weekend trek to our second home at the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich, CT for a Saturday night concert and Sunday jazz vesper.  It's always great working with Rev. Bob Naylor who is an incredible devotee of jazz and even wrote a sermon for the jazz vesper one time titled "Why Jesus Loved Jazz!"  We also have a great time working with the church choir under the direction of Alexander Constantine.  We're headed back there on January 23 and 24th 2010, as a matter of fact just a few weeks from now.

In February we headed off for a small run to Hudson, NY to perform at the Hudson Opera House and then to Burlington , VT at the University of Vermont.  Initially we were all going to ride together in the rental car I got for us but at the first sighting it was clear all of our stuff wouldn't fit so we wound up taking two cars.  We arrived in the small town of Hudson, NY on Lincoln's Birthday, Thursday February 12th and checked into our B&B the Opera House provided for us (the Country Squire) great place to stay in Hudson.  Later that night we performed a night of all original music at the opera house to a packed house of our fans.  It was a great night of music and they gave us the energy back that were giving them.  A great experience.  As is usually the case, after our concerts we're usually hungry and as always nothing is open.  We drove around a while to no avail.  We pulled over and Nelson  went into the Hudson Police station to ask where there was an all night diner.  Upon entering he saw a guy handcuffed to the wall.  Nelson asked the desk person where there was a place to eat but just then the guy handcuffed to the wall broke in and told Nelson about a great place to eat down the road.  Nelson thanked him and we hightailed it outta there.

After a good nights rest at the Country Squire B&B we headed to Burlington VT.  We got into town around 2pm and since our concert wasn't until the next day (Sat) we took advantage of seeing the town and went to see the Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino that night.  The next day we went over to the University of Vermont where our concert was being held.  Our concert was part of the historic Lane series which has brought some of the finest musicians from around the world to perform.  The concert hall had incredible acoustics and I played an incredible concert grand piano.

Our concert was on Valentine's Day and was billed as Valentine's Jazz with the Eric Mintel Quartet.  After our sound check we went into the green room to relax a while.  Upon entering the concert hall after our introduction I was surprised to hear a thunderous applause and see almost every seat in the 300 plus seat house full.  It was the start of a great concert and a great experience playing in Burlington for the first time.  Thankfully the University video taped our concert.  You can see clips of it on You Tube.  Thanks to Jane Ambrose and Natalie Neuert for bringing my quartet to the series.  Let's do it again!

After our concert we headed back to Bucks County, PA for more concerts at various venues too many to mention here but all lots of fun and very well attended.  On March 16th we went into the studio again thanks to dear friends and fans Steve and Debbie Agentis who wanted to see our Tribute to Dave Brubeck CD come to life.  We returned to Bennett Studios in Englewood, NJ and once again had our incredible recording engineer and friend Jim McGee from Spectra Sound Recordings man the board.  We recorded all of Dave Brubeck's music from Koto Song to Blue Rondo to Paul Desmond's Take Five to more obscure Brubeck tunes like Nomad, Elana Joy and Crescent City Stomp.  Eleven tunes total.  Dave wrote the liner notes and in part said "it was a surprise and pleasure and an honor to hear your group's interpretations of my songs.  Hearing your new interpretations of my music was a beautiful experience and I am grateful to you and your musicians for this honor".  What more can be said.  The CD is available through CDBaby and through our website temporarily and through special order.

In May we had a very busy month which took us all over PA, NJ and NY including a performance at the Kitano Jazz club in New York City on May 21.  The Kitano is a very hip and sophisticated spot where some of the who's who in the jazz world have performed.  We had an incredible time there and thanks to Gino Moratti for bringing the quartet in.  I hope we can do it again Gino.

The very next morning we had a "live" performance on the 10 Show in Philadelphia hosted by Bill Henley and Lori Wilson.  The crew treated us great, Gabe, our recording engineer for the show got a great sound and our performance was a lot of fun.

The adults:
Dave Mohn, Dave Antonow, Darby & Eric Mintel, Mary & Nelson Hill
The youngin's:
l-r, Tess Mintel; Kendall, Talia, Danielle & Jessica Hill

The summer found us performing at many outdoor concerts including Penn Landing Waterfront concert series, Buckingham Park, PA, Whites Rd Park in Lansdale, Plainsboro Park, NJ and
a great concert for the Arts Council of Princeton at the courtyard concert series produced by the Arts Council & directed by Dave Hanemann.

There was also lots of stories and articles that appeared on the quartet in many newspapers throughout the area regarding our tribute to Dave Brubeck CD and concert schedule.  There was also (and still is) a blog on the Princeton Landing News regarding all things Princeton and stories on the Eric Mintel Quartet's concerts.

In July we headed out to Reading to perform once again at Gerald Veasley's Jazz Base.  With my wife Darby, daughter Tess in tow, Nelson, Nelson's wife Mary, and 4 girls Jessica, Danielle, Talia & Kendall; Dave Antonow and Dave Mohn arrived at the Reading Crown Plaza Hotel and settled in for a nice night of jazz.  Once again we worked with John Ernesto and Gary Spencer and the gang.  Thanks for hosting the quartet and we still look forward to a slot at the Berks Jazz Festival.  Thanks John.

At the end of September we took off once again for New England but this time we made stops in Vermont, Boston and New Hampshire.  Our first stop was a performance and clinic for the Manchester Elementary School working again with the great Sue Schiffman.  Sue has given the kids a great foundation in jazz and her efforts really show.  It was a pleasure working with them again.  After the clinic and getting coffee we headed to Cambridge and the site of our next concert at the Regent Theater in Arlington, MA.  Eric Jackson Jazz host of WGBH in Boston invited the EMQ to the studio for a live interview.  We arrived at WGBH and went back into the studio to meet Eric.  It was a great night of music from our new Tribute to Dave Brubeck CD which Eric really enjoyed, and we shared stories of each of our careers in jazz.  Eric was great to talk with and very enthusiastic about the Eric Mintel Quartet.  Most of the people at the concert at the Regent heard the interview which was great.  Eric showed us around the WGBH studios and the performance hall which we are talking about coming back to perform.  The studios are beautiful and it was a real honor to be there.  Thank you Eric!
WGBH

After we left the studio we decided to head into Boston to get something to eat.  We had Dave Antonow's GPS going but it seemed like everywhere we went there was some kind of construction going on.  We drove aimlessly for 45 min trying to find Danny's Diner only to get to the address on the GPS and it turned out to be an apartment complex, what the??  We hightailed it back to the Hotel in Cambridge but stopped off at our usual fine dining place, the WAWA, got some food and went to bed.

The next morning we headed over to Whole Foods across from the hotel where we got some lunch.  As I was rounding the corner to go down one of the aisles I almost bumped into the actress Jennifer Garner.  After our concert that night at the Regent Theater we headed to Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH.  Dave Mohn and I in one car Dave Antonow and Nelson Hill in another car.  We arrived in New London, NH at around 1am and went to the old homestead farmhouse that would be our living quarters.  The next day we met up with Sharon Williamson and set up for our concert.  We were playing for their homecoming weekend and as always at Colby-Sawyer we had a great time.  We met new fans Ross and Robin Gott of Zero Celsius and another fan Robert Bailey who is currently in talks of bringing the quartet to Sarasota FL for a series of concerts.

In November we performed for the first time with the choral group called the Choristers under the direction of David Spitko.  We performed Robert Ray's Gospel Mass and accompanied the choir.  We had two rehearsals and two concerts.  The concerts were very well attended and we also got a chance to perform some originals from our CD Ground-Breaker.  The Choristers are a fantastic group.  We also had the pleasure of working with Baritone Warren Cooper and Soprano Rosella Washington.  Their voices along with the mass and the quartet music really sent out a great message.  Thank you David for all of your enthusiasm for the EMQ and the mass and for bringing it to life.  Looking forward to doing it again and working with the choristers again.

EMQ

Right after Thanksgiving we headed out to Jim Thorpe to perform at the Mauch Chunk Opera House on Nov 28th.  This would kick off our holiday concert series which took us all over the PA, NJ, DE area from Nov 28 all the way through Dec 22.

EMQ

We had another incredible concert at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington DE in the Baby Grand.  It was a great night of music and the audience was incredible.

Other great venues included the Ambler Theater, Forest Grove Church, North County Branch Library, Waverly Community House, Sellersville Theater, Colonial Theater and many others.  Thank you to all for your support and for making the quartet's performances very enjoyable.  See you next year.  The Christmas holidays were spent close to home this year and for the first time in the 4 years since we've lived here we had a nice fire going in the fireplace.  My daughter Tess and I made cookies for Santa and Darby and I relaxed by the fire.  Usually the quartet is out performing on the PIX11 morning show in New York on Christmas eve but this year we decided to stay home having been out for almost a month straight.  Thanks to Tom Wisnosky for thinking of my quartet and I hope to do it again next year Tom and the gang at PIX.

In addition to the EMQ's busy schedule I'm currently teaching privately and have started scheduling students Mon, Tue and Wed.  If you are interested in jazz piano lessons please feel free to call me at 215-354-0557.  Coming up for the quartet is a return to the Ferndale Inn this Sat Jan 9th and then a steady Thursday engagement at Mediterra in Princeton from 8 to 10pm with my trio, a concert at Crossing Vineyards and Winery's Jazz Night on Jan 15th, a concert at Mansfield U on Jan 22 and then off to Greenwich CT for Jan 23 and 24th for our yearly January concert and an upcoming tour of TN, NC and SC from Jan 27th through Feb 3 which I'm getting ready for as of this writing.  Please continue to check our website for new dates being added all the time

   Eric

This year the quartet will perform at many outstanding venues and festivals.
Hopefully our paths will cross somewhere along the trail.
Happy New Year!

EMQ NEWSLETTER - 2008/2009

I hope this edition of the EMQ newsletter finds you well.  I hope you've enjoyed a good summer.  I have a lot of great events to share with you as well as tell you about our brand new recording we just released titled Ground-Breaker.  When we last left off we had just finished our live performance on the CW11 Morning News in New York City on 12/24/07. What a great Christmas present that was.
The holidays were spent with family and friends and a little rest but not for long.

January through March found us performing all over the eastern seaboard playing concerts, clubs and selections from Duke Ellington's Sacred concert with the Columbia Pro-Cantare Chorus in MD under the direction of Frances Dawson and with members of Bucks County Singers under the direction of Pat Guth at Trinity UMC in Ewing, NJ.  The concerts have a great message of peace and hope and a theme of freedom.  I look forward to doing more of these concerts and what better way of spreading a message
of peace and hope but through jazz.

On Friday April 4th we broke the attendance record for the jazz cabaret at Allentown Symphony Hall.  That night the quartet performed a lot of the new music we recorded.  The enthusiasm and energy from the crowd was incredible.  The quartet was in top form.  We'll be back at Allentown Symphony Hall on Friday November 14 when we celebrate our 15th anniversary there and a concert of new music and music from Ground-Breaker.  Visit the Jazz Cabaret at Allentown Symphony. Thanks Steve, Debbie, Lou and the gang at Symphony Hall.  See you soon!

Montclair Danceworks

In April the EMQ set up residency at Montclair State University where we performed with Danceworks performing 4 Brubeck pieces choreographed by Murray Louis.  The challenge of the great choreography was that the choreographer had been performing these pieces to canned music (music played on a CD that the dancers danced to).  All of their moves and stops and starts were dictated by the tape.  He couldn't understand why we couldn't play it note for note on the tape.  I came up with counting each of the bars on the original tape that each soloist took and we could go by that and it would come out even as long as we were counting bars.  I don't know about you but I don't count when I play.  Each guy in the quartet would count for the other guy so we had each others back. We performed this 5 nights in a row and each night in the improvisation was different.  Every time it came out right and we nailed it every night.
The improvisations were different and the pieces still remained exciting to see and hear each night.  Thank you Dave, Nelson and Dave...whew!  I also have to say thank you to Chris Brubeck, son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, who suggested my quartet when he was initially contacted about doing it but couldn't because of a conflicting gig.  Chris and I have become good friends and talk frequently about the jazz music business and how to get more jazz out to the masses. Also in April we started a steady gig at Melt Restaurant in Center Valley, PA.

You can catch the Eric Mintel Trio there every Wednesday from 7-10pm and sometimes the quartet.

Phil Woods

May found us performing more outdoor concerts including Allentown Mayfair.  Our set at Mayfair was great.  We got a chance to perform a lot of the new music we recorded on the new CD.  The piano and the sound was great and very conducive to creating.  During our set at Mayfair jazz legend Phil Woods sat stage side listening to our set.  Phil is good friends with our sax man the great Nelsondo as we call him, Nelson Hill. In fact Phil was Nelson's first teacher.
Nelson as right out of college at Eastman and went on the road with Maynard Ferguson.  Nelson even did a stint with drumming legend Buddy Rich and lived to tell about it.  Phil was very complementary and it was a thrill for the other three of us to meet him.

In June  we had some nice outdoor concerts at Penn State Abington and West Oaklane Jazz Festival.  During our set at the West Oaklane Jazz Fest WJJZ's Michael Tozzi was there broadcasting live and asked me to come over and talk with him live on air.  We talked about the new CD, the opportunities we've had and continue to have and the upcoming CD Ground-Breaker.  Thank you Michael.  Next year we will celebrate our tenth anniversary at Penn State Abington.  See you soon Pam.  We had a great concert for the third year in a row at the Bristol Riverside Theatre.  This year was very special because two of our biggest fans and friends George and Nancy Wells sponsored the piano this year which was a great Yamaha grand.
Thank you George and Nancy.

July found us once more on the road to New England with a concert at Heritage Museum and Gardens at 7:30pm.  Before our concert however we made a stop at WICN in Worcester, MA and performed live in the WICN performance studio from 1 to 2pm.  Our jazz host Tyra Penn had great questions for the interview segment.  WICN is a public radio station so if you find yourself in MA tune them in at 90.5FM in Worcester, MA.  After our show at WICN we hightailed it over to Sabian Cymbals in Marshfield, MA.  We were heading to Sabian because our drummer Dave Mohn received an endorsement from Sabian and we were on the way to the factory so Dave could pick out his cymbals.  Congratulations Dave, well deserved and long over due bro!  We met with Sabian artists rep Paul Cellucci and Dave was off like a kid in a candy store.  Thank Paul.  As soon as Dave found what he wanted we headed down to Sandwich, MA and Heritage Museum and Gardens.  Our concert was supposed to be out in a huge tent but the weather made a turn for the worse and they decided to have it indoors.  I'm glad they did.  We had a very enthusiastic crowd.  Thanks to Michele Wilkins for hosting us.  Let's do it again soon!

On Monday July 28 we headed to Englewood, NJ to record our new CD Ground-Breaker at Bennett's Studio.  Bennett's is owned and operated by Tony Bennett's son Dae Bennett.  A few days before the session Dae emailed and said he would have to bump our session back from 2pm to 5pm because another group needed to be in the studio at our time slot and would that be okay.  Reluctantly I said okay.  On the way to the session I casually said to the guys "wouldn't it be funny if Tony Bennett was the one who bumped us back"?.  Sure enough it was.  When we got to the studio there was Tony walking up the hall just finishing a session.  I asked him if it would all right to get a picture with him.
He said "sure" and Dave Mohn snapped the picture here. Then Tony was gone.

Tony Bennett

It was the start to a great day.  Joining us that day was our friend, recording engineer and all around genius Jim McGee.  Our session started at 5 and we started laying down tracks by 5:30, we had the first tune in the can and done before 6.  We were not rushing through the session what so ever but we've been playing so long together and have been playing the tunes in concert for almost a year.  We were more than ready to get them down in digital.  It was a completely relaxed atmosphere at the studio and was one of the best studio experiences I've ever had.  We recorded 10 tunes in 5 1/2 hours with some tunes on one take but never more than 2.  Jim McGee had this to say "We tracked it in one night on a big old Neive vintage console in an incredible room with serious mic's and great people. Several cuts were first takes, never more than 2. The musicianship, creativity and positive vibe in that room produced a CD that is reminiscent of the way jazz used to be recorded. A classic CD of which I am proud to be a part. Thanks guys! "  Thank you Jim.

Ground Breaker

Jim McGee is incredible to work with.  Try Jim on your next recording project.  As long as he's not working with us :  ) You won't be disappointed.  We spent several days driving up to Jim's house in the country and listening to the playbacks until everyone was happy with the end result.  I couldn't be happier and hope you get a chance to purchase Ground-Breaker.

It's now available on CD Baby and also on Apple iTunes for your iPod.
The CD can also be purchased through our WEBSITE with PayPal.

Phil Woods w/EMQ

We released the CD on September 1 and our first gig celebrating the CD was at the COTA Festival on September 6.  Not only did we have the pleasure of performing for the first time at this historic festival but had the extreme pleasure of Phil Woods sitting in with the Eric Mintel Quartet playing a tune.
Garth Woods snapped the picture here.

Thanks Phil, Rick Chamberlain and the gang.
It was a blast.

We recently kicked off the Free at the Kimmel Series at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, PA on Friday September 19.  We performed live in Commonwealth Plaza and had a very large enthusiastic crowd wanting to hear more of us. Thank you Tom Warner, Mervon Mehta and Megan Fitzgerald for all of your enthusiasm for the Eric Mintel Quartet. We had a great time!

At the Kimmel Center

As of this writing we just got back from Savannah and as featured performers at the 27th Annual Savannah Jazz Festival on Wednesday September 24.  We also performed on Thursday September 25 at a very hip club called Jazz'd in Savannah.  If you're ever down there look them up.  Brian and Julie Curry are the hippest club owners and treated the quartet great!  Thanks Brian and Julie.  On Friday September 26 we had a great concert at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA which is about an hour outside of Savannah.  We did a Q&A before the show then went into the performance.  Thanks go to Albert Bertallion and jazz studies teacher and trumpeter Bill Schmid.  The concert hall was incredible and the sound impeccable.  Thanks Pete.  We kept traveling down to a minimum on this one because we were able to stay in the same hotel all 3 nights.  Meanwhile back at the hotel jam sessions started Thursday night at 11pm and all the area musicians came out to play.

On the same bill with us at the Savannah Jazz Festival was the incredible pianist Bob James who was performing Friday night.  I was in the lobby getting coffee when I noticed Bob going into the elevator and realized he was staying at the same hotel.  I was able to give Bob a copy of our new CD.  Our time in Savannah was short and sweet.
A huge thank you goes out to our fearless driver Dave Antonow who mans the wheel when we go out on the road.
Thanks Dave, go right, no left, wait!!

After the Savannah Jazz Fest we came home for a couple of days then flew right back to Georgia.  This time it was a  4 day run in Southwest Georgia from October 6th through the 10th.  Our first stop was on Monday Oct 6 at Darton College.  We've performed at Darton many times before.  It was a day of jazz with a concert at 12pm for the students and then another concert that night for the students and the public.  They video taped the concert that night.  If you get a chance to look on You Tube, I posted Mojito Madness from the concert.  When you go on You Tube type in Eric Mintel Quartet and look for EMQ on Tour and there it is along with several other videos from other concerts.  The next day we were off to a 3 day residency at Georgia Southwestern U in Americus GA.  We worked with the choir students of Julie Megginson and prepared for our concert performing the sacred music of Duke Ellington.  The choir was fantastic and when we went in for the first day's rehearsal they nailed it.  During the second part of the day we talked to
music students about the business of jazz, how o listen to jazz, the roles of the instruments and how a jazz group communicates.

At The Rylander

Dave Mohn conducted a master class on drumming.   During our time in Americus we stayed at the beautiful Windsor Hotel.  It turns out the Windsor Hotel is one of the top 10 most haunted hotels in the country with spirits being seen on the third floor.  Guess what floor we were on?...the third.  I didn't see anything but I thought I did see Nelson Hill levitate a few time while playing a solo.  Our concert took place at the Rylander Theater across from our hotel.  The Rylander is a beautiful concert hall which was totally renovated to it's original beauty a few years ago.  There's a photo of it posted on the photos page here on the site. We started off with a jazz set followed by the Sacred concert.  Once again the choir nailed it and Julie directed them to perfection.  I'm looking forward to working with them again.  Joining us that week on bass was Steve Varner who covered for Dave Antonow who couldn't make the trip.  Steve did a great job.

At the end of October we performed for the first time at Forest Grove Presbyterian Church in Bucks County, PA.  They have really embraced straight ahead jazz thanks to Pat Guth the new music director.  The small church was packed to rafters with jazz fans and EMQ fans.  It was a beautiful fall afternoon with a very appreciative crowd.  We'll be back at Forest Grove in December of 09.  Looking forward to it.  Thanks Pat.

On November 14 we had another great concert and capacity crowd at Allentown Symphony Hall.  Jazz writer, Steve Siegel, wrote a great review on the EMQ's new CD Ground-Breaker.  Thanks Steve for your kind words.  We played some new music I wrote a few days prior as well as mostly music from the new CD.  It was a great night.  If you're ever in the Allentown area check out the Jazz Cabaret at Allentown Symphony Hall.  It's a great room and a great atmosphere to listen to jazz.
Thanks again Steve and Deb and Lucy and Debbie.  We'll see you soon.

After the concert in Allentown we got ready for a three day run in North Carolina with concerts at the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines on November 21 then to the Hayes Center in Blowing Rock on the 22nd then back home on the 23rd and a concert at Trenton City Museum that night.  While at the Philadelphia airport a snowstorm came out of nowhere.  Thankfully we got an early flight out but while we sat on the tarmac they had to de-ice the entire plane before take off.  Finally after 40 min we took off and it's a good thing we did because they didn't let anymore planes out and there was a 6 hour backup.  We arrived in Durham and drove an hour to Southern Pines.  Whatever snow we had in Philly it didn't seem to reach Southern Pines.  What an incredible town.  There is a real great cultural element among the people and the places there.  We checked into the beautiful Jefferson Hotel.  I was looking forward to getting some rest before the concert.  Just as I closed my eyes my cell phone rang and it was my contact for our next day concert at the Hayes Center.  Turns out Blowing Rock which was 3 hours from Southern Pines had a snowstorm which dumped 10 inches and the mountain road to get to the Hayes Center was shut down with no other way to get there.  He told me our concert had to be cancelled.  They were very apologetic and fulfilled my contract.  I breathed a sigh of relief.  As of this writing we are figuring out a rescheduled date so we can get back to the Hayes Center. Back in Southern Pines and after getting no rest at all, Dave Antonow and I with coffee in hand took a walk around town and down to the Sunrise Theater.  All over the town posters were placed everywhere for our concert.  Jordan Baker came over and handed me the newspaper which carried a story of the quartet's performance with a huge picture of us on the cover of the entertainment section.  It was a great night with the audience yelling "Come back!, Come back!" at the end of the concert.
I'm looking forward to it.  Thanks Jordan.

In December we had several holiday jazz concerts starting at Godfrey Daniel's in Bethlehem, Council Rock HS South in Newtown, PA, the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, PA, Crossing Vineyards and Winery in Washington Crossing, PA and the Sellersville Theater.  Godfrey Daniels is a great place to play.  It's a listening room.  We had a very nice and intimate crowd and we tried some brand new tunes and songs from the CD.  The sponsor that night was WDIY.  Thanks Bill and thanks to David Reber and Steve Walker.

At The Colonial Theater

The Colonial Theater in Phoenixville was great.  It is a beautiful theater with great acoustics.  If you remember the scene in the 1950's movie the Blob where people are running out of the movie theater where the Blob is oozing out of the projector room into the theater,
that's the Colonial Theater.

EMQ,in the News

Turns out they filmed that movie all over Phoenixville and Downingtown.  I also found out Houdini performed there as well.  We even made the front page of the Phoenix Newspaper the next day.

Later that week we performed at Council Rock HS South in Newtown, PA where we performed with the South Vocal ensemble under the direction of Corey Axler.  We had a great time and at the end of the concert were joined by almost 100 students from the choir.
It was a lot of fun.

On December 5th the Wall Street Journal ran my picture and a blurb about the EMQ performing at Crossing Vineyards and Winery on December 18.  We had a great time at Crossing Vineyards with a great crowd.  Thanks Tom and Chris.  Our last holiday concert of the year was performed at the Sellersville Theater.  Joining us this year at the ST was the Wissahickon Camerata under the direction of John Conahan.  Originally the Souderton High School Choir was supposed to do the concert with us but with scheduling conflicts and contractual issues had to pull out of it this year.  John and his choir did an incredible job.  Thanks John.

Once again on a very early Christmas eve morning me, Nelson, Dave Antonow and Dave Mohn went into New York City to perform again on the CW11 Morning News which is now PIX11.  We loaded in earlier this year because the show is on a half hour earlier.  This year we checked in from a different spot than last year.  As I walked into the lobby of the Daily News Building and saw the huge globe spinning in the lobby it looked very familiar to me like I had seen this before somewhere.  Turns out I did.  The Daily News Building was used as the Daily Planet building in Superman the Movie with Christopher Reeve.  So cool.  We met up with director and good friend of the EMQ Tom Wisnosky who also brought out his son Mike and friend Brandon who are EMQ fans.As we were waiting to do the sound check news anchor Tiffany McElroy came up and said hello.  I worked with Tiffany when the quartet performed on the "10" show when she was a host.  I gave her a copy of the new CD.

@ PIX w/Emily

After our sound check at 4am we went back to the Greenroom and got some rest before our 8:50 to 9:00am time slot.  The performance went well and everyone in the quartet got a chance to shine although Dave Mohn's drum solo got clipped towards the end but Dave is such a great cat that he didn't mind for the good of the group.  Thanks Tom, Kate, Jamie, Emily and the rest of the crew.

Some great things coming up this year for the quartet are a feature story in the June issue of Down Beat Magazine.  A New York City performance at the Kitano on Thursday May 21 and a filming of the quartet in a Marian McPartland documentary.  Until then please continue to check our website as dates are being added all the time.
We look forward to seeing you again and sharing our love
of jazz with you.  Thanks for your support and Happy New Year!

Please keep checking our website for more concerts and gigs coming up.  Some good news in the works.  In January a film crew will film me playing some of Marian McPartland's tunes for an up coming documentary about Marian called Good Times.  Speaking of Marian, she recently sent me a stack of her original music to record for my next solo piano CD.  That will be another project in the works soon.  As always and I can't say it enough, thank you for your support over the years.
This year I'm celebrating 15 years as the leader of the Eric Mintel Quartet.

Warm regards,
Eric Mintel

EMQ 2007 NEWSLETTER
(More photos coming soon)

EMQ

Dear Friends,

I hope you enjoy this latest installment of the Eric Mintel Quartet newsletter.  Usually I would do our newsletters every few months to keep you posted on the latest with the quartet but lately it's been more like once a year as the quartet continues to keep a very active performing and touring schedule.  I left off with you last December so I'll try and pick up where I left off.  If you see references to EMQ that's short for the Eric Mintel Quartet but you already knew that.  2007 started off with the recording of our latest CD Times Change.  We spent one full day on January 15 recording the tunes in either one or two takes and the next day mixing and mastering.  We recorded 18 tunes and revisited some songs I wrote a while ago like Boogie Sugar, Philadelphia Rush Hour and the Paul Desmond classic Take Five.  I was very happy when Marian McPartland heard that we were going to record a new album and asked me if I would like to record one of her songs called Ambiance.  Which we did.  We decided on 13 tunes and over 70 min of music.  Joining me on the record  are the great Nelson Hill on alto sax, the incredible Dave Antonow on bass and Mr. Time Dave Mohn on drums.  The music was elevated to another level and we captured the pure joy of playing together and the raw spontaneous energy which is so important in jazz.  We recorded at Morning Star Studios in Springhouse, PA.  Dave Brubeck called me to say that he loved the new album.  Dave and I talked at length about the quartet and what direction we're heading.  Dave also wrote the liner notes to the CD and said "This new CD by the Eric Mintel Quartet is absolutely wonderful.  Each member of the Eric Mintel Quartet are talented and gifted individuals.  This is a very strong group".  Also joining in on the other half of the liner notes was XM Satellite Radio Jazz Programmer Max Myrick who said "this CD is like waking up to a sunny day".

Times Change is in heavy air play on XM Satellite Radio and several jazz stations around the country including WKAR in Michigan, WRTI in Philadelphia, WPKN in Bridgeport, CT, WICN in Boston, MA, WBGO in Newark, NJ and several jazz stations on the West Coast.    Thank you to all who have purchased the CD.  We're very glad you're enjoying it.  We'll be recording another album in January or February of all new material.

In April we performed on the Homegrown Music program
on WVIA in Pittston, PA near Scranton, PA.

WVIA

The show was hosted by George Graham and will air sometime in January or February of 2008 last I heard.  We'll keep you posted.  We had a three camera crew filming the quartet performing my tunes and some classic standards.  We had a great time and George and the gang at WVIA were great and captured the energy of the quartet on film.  Thanks George and Karyn.

We continued to keep busy for the first half of the year with concerts in the tri-state area and into New England.  The quartet performed for the Rutgers Jazz Festival on the main stage at the Gordon Theater on the campus of Rutgers' Camden campus.

Courier News

We made the front cover of the Courier Post newspaper with the headline "Jazzin' it Up The Eric Mintel Quartet grooves at the Gordon Theater.  Entertainment reporter Dana Ford wrote a great story on the quartet.  Also performing that night was Terrance Blanchard who I met in Boston at the Regatta Bar years ago where he was performing with his group.  Nice cat and a great player.

In May we performed at the first annual Longwood Gardens Jazz and Wine Festival.  The event was put together by my very good friend and jazz cat Warren Oree who is also bassist and leader of the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble and co-founder of Lifeline Music Coalition along with his partner Graziella D'Amillio.  The event was an incredible success with over 1,500 people in attendance that day.  Also on the bill was Denise King, Arpeggio and others.  After the concert Dave Mohn and I hopped in the car to go see Dave Brubeck perform in Bryn Mawr that night.  The concert took place at the Bryn Mawr Cathedral.  The DBQ opened with a jazz set.  In early April, Dave was recovering from an ankle injury.  He was incredible that night.  At 86 he is playing with more energy than ever before.  His musical ideas still continue to grow and hearing Dave, Bobby Millitello, Randy Jones and another friend of the EMQ Mike Moore on bass, was a real treat.  The second set consisted of Brubeck's the Gates of Justice which he performed with the incredible Singing City choir which was conducted by Brubeck's manager and conductor Russell Glloyd.
@JVC Festival

In late May I got an email from Festival Productions in New York City asking if I would like to perform at the JVC Jazz Festival in June.  I said an enthusiastic yes!  The festival came to Philadelphia on June 8th.  Macy's was the major sponsor of last year's JVC Jazz Fest.  We performed at the Macy's Superstore in Philadelphia with the JVC backdrop and logos everywhere.  The EMQ was also featured in a full page ad in the June issue of Jazz Times Magazine.  It was an incredible event.  After the show Rick White, festival producer, came over to me and said "Wow."  Rick was very happy with the turn out and the performance by the quartet.  I'm hoping to get to Newport this year or Saratoga or the many great jazz festivals Festival Productions has.

The summer was spent performing in many outdoor concerts too numerous to mention here but all very well attended and a lot of fun.  I'm always writing new material and always working on different arrangements of standard tunes and the summer concerts were a way of presenting some of the new material I've written and which the whole quartet contributed to.
Brubeck Bros, EMQ & Tom Wisnosky

In September we held the 4th annual Morrisville Jazz Festival in memory of Mike Sherlock in Williamson Park in Morrisville, PA.  The festival was held on Labor Day Monday September 3 and featured the Eric Mintel Quartet and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet featuring Chris Brubeck and Dan Brubeck along with Chuck Lamb on piano and Mike D'Amico on guitar.  It was a great day and what made it even better was the generosity of Morrisville Borough and their great Mayor Tom Wisnosky and all the volunteers that made it all possible.  Chris and Dan were such a joy to work with.  Chris is one of the nicest guys I've ever met and one hell of an arranger, trombonist and bass player.  Dan is an incredible drummer but also a great guy.  We had a great time listening to them, hanging after the concert and had a great photo together after the concert.  Chris has kept a very busy schedule with performances all over the country and the world. Thanks to Chris, the EMQ is doing a Brubeck program at Montclair State University in April 2008.  The concert is part of the Performance Art series where we will share the stage with a professional dance troupe led by Tito Del Saz from NYC.  They will modern dance as we improvise on numbers like Take Five, Koto Song, Three To Get Ready and Unsquare Dance.  They have already started rehearsals.  The shows run for 4 nights in a row.  Since we will be in Montclair, we will be working with students in some of the local schools with workshops on jazz and will also perform assemblies at some of the surrounding schools.  Everything will be posted on our web site soon.

In October I celebrated my 40th birthday.  My wife Darby threw a surprise Birthday Party for me at our home.  She put everything together making phone calls and getting everyone together.  It was a great night celebrated with all of our friends and extended family of the quartet.  Thank you my love.  Also in October I was very pleased to get an email from the Yamaha corporation of America saying that I have achieved status as a Yamaha Artist.  I'm now endorsing Yamaha grand pianos and keyboards.  Yamaha is an incredible company and I've played their instruments for years.  You can see my page on the Yamaha site by clicking on this link:

On November 23rd the quartet performed for the 5th year in a row at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA.  Every year we kick off our holiday tour from Bucks and this year was no exception.  We premiered a new choral piece I wrote titled "Thank You Very Much" which was also arranged by my friend Corey Axler.  Joining us that night was the great Council Rock HS South vocal ensemble led by Corey Axler.  Jon Lee, Aaron and Dan made our concert possible.  Thanks Jon for providing me with the new Yamaha baby grand from Nolde's Pianos in Flemington, NJ.  We'll see you next year.

After the concert at Bucks we hopped on a plane for North Carolina, flying first into Atlanta, then flying to Asheville, NC then in a car for a two and a half hour drive up through the mountains of North Carolina on our way to Blowing Rock to the Hayes Performing Arts Center.  As we were driving into Blowing Rock we kept going higher and higher.  We passed one thousand foot elevation signs then two thousand then three thousand.  Around every corner we thought oh there's the hotel but no, keep going.  Oh wait there it is up there, no keep going.  Finally at almost four thousand feet we reached the town of Blowing Rock and an incredible cultural community there.  We eventually did reach our hotel.  Two miles down the road was the Hayes Performing Arts Center where the quartet performed that night.  Actually we had about 2 hours of rest before we went on.  The Hayes Center is practically brand new and state of the art.  Jeff Clark is the director and a great guy to work with.  Jeff and the gang made our performance there very enjoyable and had exactly what we needed for our backline.  We had a great audience who came out and gave us a standing O at the end.  Jeff emailed me a few weeks later to say that our concert was one of the most exciting musical events to happen there this year and he was still getting positive comments weeks later.  Thanks Jeff, we'll see you next year.

From December 3 -8 the quartet went on a small tour of New England with concerts in Hudson, NY, Manchester, VT, Colby Sawyer College, NH Chandler Music Hall VT, Danbury Library, CT and Norfolk Library, CT.  I had rented a Chevy Suburban for the trek through New England rather than getting on a plane and worrying about flight delays, baggage etc.

Eric@HusdonOperaHouse

We arrived in Hudson, NY on December 4 for our performance at the Hudson Opera House.  The town was very small but has a very hip cultural scene happening.  After checking in to our nice B&B they arranged for us, we got in a little nap then headed down the block to the Opera House.  We conducted a pre-concert jazz talk then went into the concert which was very well attended.  Thanks to Gary and Joe, we hope to see you next year.  Early the next day we headed to Manchester Vermont to the Manchester Elementary School where we conducted an all day clinic culminating with an assembly for the entire school.  We talked about improvisation, jazz scales and applied what we talked about to the actual performance.  We performed two songs with the jazz band "Hot Chocolate" from the Polar Express and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy".  Sue Schiffman has done an incredible job of giving the kids a great foundation in jazz and hopefully they took some of the ideas Nelson, Dave, Dave and I gave them and can apply it to improvising.

Colby-Sawyer-2007

After the clinic we headed to New London, NH and Colby-Sawyer college for another concert that night.  We arrived around 4:30pm and stayed in a house that the campus recently purchased.  After settling in we headed over to the concert.  The concert that night took place in Wheeler Hall.  We had a packed house of very knowledgeable jazz fans and EMQ fans.  On the tour we performed a lot of the music of Vince Guaraldi but also tried new things that I wrote including a new piece called Ten on One.  Thanks Sharon and Susan for everything, we'll see you next year.  You're the best.  The next morning we had a very nice breakfast provided by the college then headed to Randolph, VT and Chandler Music Hall.  I have to say that while we were in New England and that far North there was snow everywhere but on the roads.  The week before we left for the tour NH and VT had gotten a big snow storm but most of it was cleared by the time we got there.  On the way to Randolph I had specific directions to the place we were to stay ....Maple Cake Farm.  After heading down a long country road that we thought the farm was on, we quickly decided it was not right because suddenly it became a snow covered dirt road heading straight into the woods.  We turned around and stopped in to Floyd's General store where the man behind the counter, a man named Al who was also the town Fire Chief, set us straight to where we had to go.  We arrived at the farm which was practically in the middle of nowhere with snow and trees as far as the eye could see.  We had the farm all to ourselves.

I wanna see Moose!

All during the trip Nelson was yelling "I want to see some Moose"but the only thing we saw were moose crossing signs.  This was the second time I was at the Chandler Music Hall since 1999.  Before the concert we went to the Randolph HS to work for an hour or so with the jazz students of jazz studies teacher Josh Stumf.  We all played along on the blues and on several tunes trying to give the kids a foundation on which to improvise.  They did a great job.  Josh has them working hard and these kids are a dedicated bunch.  Back at Chandler Hall, Becky, Mimi and our sound crew did an incredible job of getting everything right for the concert and we had a lot of fun.  Thanks Becky!  The next day we left the farm and headed to Worcester, MA for a radio interview with the quartet on WICN New England's Jazz Station.

We arrived at WICN and met jazz host Tyra Penn. Tyra had great questions for the quartet and also played selections from Times Change.  If you're ever in Massachusetts tune into WICN 90.5FM and listen to some great jazz.  It's also a public radio station and any support you can give will be most appreciated.  One thing we mentioned on the air was the importance of public radio for jazz artists like myself and others and giving us an outlet for our music to be heard.  Thanks Tyra, we hope to see you soon.  After the interview at WICN we headed west to Danbury, CT and the Danbury Public Library.  Unfortunately a snow storm came out of nowhere and as a result, we were stuck on 84 W for 3 1/2 hours making it to Danbury with minutes to spare for the gig but we made it.  Waiting for us was a full house of fans eager to hear the music of the EMQ.  I don't know why but I thought it was appropriate and I played "Almost Like Being in Love" where the first goes "What a day it has been, what a rare mood I'm in" and let me tell you the mood was not happy being stuck in traffic that long.  We made it through and had a great concert thanks to the Friends of the Danbury Library and Maryellen DeJong.  After a great night's sleep we headed off to Norfolk, CT to the Norfolk Library.

EMQ@Yale

Since the library was undergoing some construction our concert this year was to be held on the campus of the Yale Summer School of Music.  The concert was sponsored by the Norfolk Library.  Before the concert we met up with our very good friends Andy and Corina Hughes.  Andy was instrumental in getting us on QVC a few years ago.  It was great to see them again.  They took some great photos of the quartet's performance that day and the last concert on the tour.  After the concert we said our goodbyes and headed for home and more concerts with Dave Antonow at the helm. Dave was our fearless driver who drove for the entire time on the tour.
We were in good hands.  Thanks Dave.

EMQ@Alexandria

On December 14th the quartet performed at the Alexandria Middle School in NJ.  We did a morning jazz clinic working with the choir students of Mrs. Terry Travis and the jazz students of Mrs. Debbie Glick.  When we walked in, the kids were already belting out their own improvisations and were getting around very well on their instruments.  Debbie has given the kids an incredible foundation in jazz and they are soaking it up.  We performed some of the Vince Guaraldi songs with the choir and then did a set on our own and then the jazz band and concert band did some tunes on their own.  It was a great day!  Thanks Debbie and Terry, we'll see you soon!

December 15 took us to Grace Lutheran Church in Hatfield, PA for another great concert, thank you Pastor Robert Doll and the choir.  December 18 I was interviewed by Bill Dautremont-Smith at WDIY Radio in Bethlehem, PA.  Bill and I talked about our upcoming concert at the Sellersville Theater and some of the other things going on with the quartet and played music from Times Change and my solo piano CD Silent Night.  Thanks Bill.  Speaking of the Sellersville Theater.  We performed to a full house of fans on Friday December 21.  The audience was incredible and fueled us all night long.  We performed some new things I've written like Ten on 1 and Without You.  We also performed with the Souderton HS Advanced Choir under the direction of Teresa Washam.  What a great group of kids and their voices were incredible.  They are very dedicated and really came through for us.  Thanks Teresa!  I also had a chance to perform with my brand new keyboard that night which I had gotten from Yamaha the day before.  I now have the new state of the art Yamaha CP300 which has some of the best piano sounds I've ever heard.  After the encore, and two standing O's by the great audience with us that night, we were invited for dinner at the Washington House Restaurant which was provided by the Theater.  Thanks to all the staff at the theater, let's do it again
EMQ@Tom Wisnosky@NY'sCW11

On Christmas Eve morning the quartet was invited to perform on the CW 11 Morning News in New York City.  We arrived at the television studio at 3am for our load in and sound check at 4:30am.  Yamaha provided me with a C7 concert Grand, thank you Anamarie!!  The best thing about getting to New York at that time is we made it across town in about 5 min as opposed to an hour of more mid-day.  Even at 3am the city was very much alive with the vibrant colors and lights and activity. The quartet did some short promos and then we went live at 8:50am to 9:00am.  We performed my new piece Ten on 1 and Vince Guaraldi's Linus and Lucy.  Our host, Emily Frances, interviewed me for a few seconds between songs.  You can see the performance and interview here at this link.  Our performance went out Nationwide and into various parts of Europe.  Thanks to Tom Wisnosky without whom this would not have been possible. Thanks go out also to Executive Producer: Emad Ashgar, Celebrity Booker: Spencer Mindich, Producer: Kate Sullivan, Audio Technician: James Boyd and to Bart and the rest of the crew for having the vision to present jazz and for making our day with you very special and an enjoyable end to our holiday tour.
Happy New Year! To watch the performance go to: NEWS
